About Me

I qualified as a physiotherapist in 1995 and continue to work as a physiotherapist specialising in cancer and palliative
care. Over the years I have developed an interest in the use of comlementary therapies and have gained qualifications
in Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Massage, Connective Tissue Massage, Reiki and Hopi Ear Candles.

Complementary therapies adopt a holistic approach which means you are seen as a whole person with your body,
mind and spirit all inter-related and contributing to your state of health. All the therapies promote relaxation and a
feeling of general well being. My expereince as a physotherapist enables me to adopt a clinical focus to the
therapies that I perform.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to promote relaxation and other therapeutic effects. Following a consultation
an oil blend will be made to suit your individual needs. As well as promoting relaxation, essential oils are useful for
a variety of conditions such as insomnia, aches and pains, respiratory conditions, skin problems and hormonal
imbalance. All the oils are 100% pure.

Swedish Massage

Massage is the manipulation of body tissues to promote therapeutic effects. In Swedish Massage all the strokes relate
to the body's circulatory and lymphatic system. In this way they help to relieve fatigue and promote deep relaxation.

Connective Tissue Massage

Connective Tissue Massage works to release tight scar tissue or tissues surrounding a scar. It is particulary useful
in the release of tissue following surgery such as mastectomy and breast reconstruction for breast cancer. It may help
to improve shoulder movement and relieve post surgical pain. The treatment may also be used on other parts of
the body.

Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese therapy that can be used to promote relaxation. The word is Japanese, "REI" meaning universal
and "KI" meaning life force energy. Reiki is a way of channelling energy in the body to achieve balance. In a Reik
i treatment the practitioner places his/her hands over a number of positions on the body (chakra points), acting as a
channel for the Reiki energy. The energy then begins to move in and through your system, naturally directing itself to
the source of any imbalance. Reiki is particulary useful to calm thoughts and to reduce stress, anxiety and depression.
I have found it to be very helpful in the management of panic attacks and hyperventilation syndrome in conjunction
with physiotherapy techniques.

Reflexology

Reflexology involves the use of subtle massage and pressure over reflex areas on the feet or hands. The therapy is
based on the belief that different areas on the feet or hands are related to different parts of the body. The treatment is
very relaxing and may be useful for conditions such as menstrual problems, fertility issues, insomnia, migraine, irritable
bowel, respiratory conditions and muscular pain. Sometimes clients report an effect after just one session, however
changes may not occur until after 5-6 treatments. A course of 6 is suggested to gain full benefit.

Hopi Ear Candles

Hopi Ear Candles are helpful in the treatment of earwax, sinusitis, tinnitus, headaches and stress. This soothing
treatment involves gently inserting a lit candle into the outer ear passage. The flame creates a 'chimney effect'
generating a massage like effect on the eardrum. The treatment is very relaxing and may balance pressure in the ears
and sinuses, induce freer nasal breathing and help to clear earwax. It is not suitable for clients with a perforated
eardrum, grommets or inflammation in the ear.

Physiotherapy Advice in Cancer Care and Management of Anxiety, Breathlessness and Fatigue

By using a combination of holistic therapies and physiotherapy techniques I may be able to assist with the
management of cancer related symptoms and anxiety, breathlessness and fatigue (either cancer related or as a result
of other health conditions). Please feel free to contact me by phone or email for more information and to discuss
whether these techniques may be beneficial to you.

It is important to realise that complementary therapies will not 'cure' any conditions but may help you to manage your
symptoms, feel a sense of well being and improve your general health. The therapies work alongside convential
medicine and you may want to inform your doctor that you are receiving treatment.

Home Visits

In order to provide high quality treatment I prefer to work from the therapy room where I have access to a massage
couch, reflexology chair and a large selection of aromatherapy oils. However in exceptional circumstances I may be
able to provide an adapted treatment in your own home (South Manchester only).

A £15 home visit charge will be added to the treatment price to allow for my travelling time and costs.

Please feel free to contact me by phone or email to discuss any queries you may have, or to book an appointment.
